Whelan Lake



Whelan Lake is a 73-acre bird sanctuary located on the northern side of Oceanside. It lies adjacent to Oceanside's San Luis Rey Wastewater Treatment Plant, and is bordered on the north by Camp Pendleton. The Lake is a man-made body of water that once supplied a dairy farm owned by the Whelan Family. Ellen Whelan, upon her death in 1985, donated the property to a Board of Trustees with the understanding that the land was to remain protected and used as a sanctuary for migrating and permanent waterfowl.

BVAS conducts a monthly bird walk and census at the Sanctuary on the first Saturday of each month. All members are urged to attend these walks and enjoy one of the area's premier birding locations. More than fifty spiecies are regularly observed on these outings, with more than 170 total spieces sighted to date.

You are welcome to visit the sanctuary on your own if you can't make one of the monthly walks, but, since it is located on private property, you must make advanced arrangements with the caretaker by calling 760-722-4887.

DIRECTIONS
Go east on 76 to Douglas. Turn left (north) and continue to North River Rd. Turn left and continue to the end of the street. North River Road dead-ends at the entrance gate.
